Anyone can photograph a kitchen.

A house is thirty seconds of a decision. The rest is the street it stands on — who parks where, which way the light comes in at four o'clock, how far the walk back from the stop is in the rain. NORTHGATE photographs that first, and puts the particulars underneath.

  • 01The first frame is the road. If the street does not survive a photograph taken from the pavement opposite, no interior shot will fix it.
  • 02Three hours, not one. Dawn, mid-afternoon and dusk are three different places, and only one of them is ever in a listing.
  • 03Say the awkward thing. The bins, the bus route, the junction. A viewing is where a buyer finds out anyway.

    You pick the hour

    Not the hour that suits the diary. If you want to see the junction at half past three on a school day, that is when we open the door.

  2. 02

    We walk the street first

    Ten minutes outside before the key comes out: the parking, the neighbours' frontages, the walk to the stop, whatever the road does at that hour.

  3. 03

    You get the awkward answers

    Damp, boundaries, the extension next door that has planning in. Written down, in the follow-up, whether or not you asked.
